He tried putting his best face forward, compartmentalizing his loss and dread. Robotically attending to his daily routine, overwriting and underthinking every simple task he was aware he wasn't alone. He saw the ghosts. He saw the reminders. He heard the fleeting thoughts surrounding her. Her voice. Her laugh. That lilting giggle.
All the time he kept reminding himself that she really didn't care. That it all was a show.

Interlude: I Lost A Friend Today
Or did I? I worked closely with someone who I thought was a friend but over the last few weeks I began to doubt whether this person was truly in my corner. Today a simple misunderstanding occurred one that I did not cause but one I corrected because of the negligence of another. The person who caused the problem was dealt with decisively yet my friend who was not hurt by this negligence or even threatened by it turned on me without any kind of explanation requested.
I lost a friend today? No I lost someone who was dishonest with me; who secretly didn't respect me. I lost someone who was pulling the wool over my eyes and was using me.
At first I thought about mourning, and a part of me will, but mostly I now understand that I am better off without the leech.
